Spending of €335,000 on Leinster House bike shelter just latest value-for-money concern involving Office of Public Works

Expenditure of more than €335,000 on a bike shed at Leinster House, as first revealed on Sunday through records obtained by Right to Know, has been in the headlines this week.

It’s not the first time significant value-for-money questions have been raised over how the Office of Public Works manages projects however.

Today we publish a copy of what is known as the ‘five-case review’ an examination of a series of OPW deals by two senior staff which document colossal failures in controls over spending of taxpayer funds.

Below are the bike shelter costs for the record. The case has already gone to internal review.

Further down, you’ll find the ‘five-case review’ – jump to Page 21 for the main report.

Here as well is a link to a report we worked on with RTÉ Investigates in which the remarkably brave former civil servant Allen Morgan came forward to discuss with reporter Paul Murphy his long-standing concerns about the OPW, where he worked for 37 years.
